Construction is a fantastic sector. Working with your hands, seeing tangible results and helping build the future of Limburg. But before you're allowed on the construction site, there's one important topic you can't avoid: certificates. They're essential for your safety and that of your colleagues. It might seem like a long list, but don't worry. We've listed the most important ones for you, starting with the absolute basics.
Your first step: the VCA certificate is king
If there's one certificate you should see as your starting point, it's your VCA. Without this piece of paper, you simply won't get onto most large construction sites.
What is VCA?
VCA stands for Safety, Health and Environment Checklist for Contractors (in Dutch: Veiligheid, Gezondheid en Milieu Checklist Aannemers). It's the national standard that demonstrates you have basic knowledge of safe and healthy working practices. You learn to recognise risks and how to prevent accidents. For most operational employees, the B-VCA (Basic Safety VCA) certificate is sufficient.
How do you get it and what does it cost?
You obtain your B-VCA by taking a course (often one day) followed by an exam. There are numerous training providers in the region offering this.
- Cost: Expect to pay between €200 and €300 for the course including the exam.
- Validity: Your VCA certificate is valid for 10 years.
The next step: certificates for machinery and equipment
With your VCA in hand, you've cleared the most important hurdle. The next step depends on the specific work you'll be doing. To operate heavy machinery or specific equipment, you'll need separate certificates that demonstrate your competence.
Examples of in-demand certificates:
- Forklift certificate: Essential if you need to move materials with a forklift in a warehouse, on an outdoor site or on the construction site. The course usually lasts one or two days. The certificate is valid for 5 years and costs on average between €150 and €250.
- Aerial work platform certificate: Going to work at height? Then a certificate for safely operating an aerial work platform is often mandatory. Here too, you'll take a short training course with a practical exam. This certificate is usually valid for 5 years and costs range from around €200 to €350.
- Safe Lifting / Rigging Certificate: Working a lot with cranes? Then the person attaching the loads to the hook (the 'rigger') must be certified for this. This ensures that lifting is done safely. Such a certificate is valid for 5 years.
Specialist certificates and the Digital Safety Passport (DVP)
In addition to the general certificates, there are numerous specialist qualifications. Think of BHV (Company Emergency Response), Asbestos Recognition or certificates for working with specific chemical substances. These often depend on the exact role and are sometimes provided by the employer.
Another term you might come across is the Digital Safety Passport (DVP). This is not a certificate in itself, but a digital pass that keeps track of all your certificates obtained, instructions and work experience. The DVP is mainly mandatory on ProRail projects and at large industrial sites.
