Writing a cover letter, updating your CV… it can sometimes feel like a huge task. Especially if you've just left school, are coming from a different field, or are new to the Netherlands. But we have good news: for many jobs, such as in cleaning, a perfect CV isn't the most important thing at all. What really matters is who you are as a person.

What does matter?

In cleaning, but also in production or logistics, employers mainly look at things other than a list of previous jobs. They want to know whether you're the right person for the team and the job. Think of things like:

  • Motivation: Are you eager to start? Do you like to roll up your sleeves and learn something new? That's worth its weight in gold!
  • Reliability: Are you on time? Do you do what you promise? An employer needs to be able to count on you. If you show that you're reliable, you're already at a huge advantage.
  • Availability: When can and want you to work? Are you flexible with your hours? Being clear about this is very important to an employer.
  • A positive attitude: Are you friendly, do you enjoy working with others, and aren't you afraid to tackle a task? A good atmosphere in the workplace starts with the right people.

These qualities don't appear on a CV, but you can show them perfectly in a personal conversation.

Your first interview: good preparation

Even without a CV, good preparation is half the work. It shows that you take the job seriously. With a few simple steps, you'll already be well on your way.

Think about these questions in advance

You don't need to have perfect answers, but do think about them beforehand. Write it down for yourself if that helps.

  • Why do you want this job? Maybe you enjoy being physically active, or you get satisfaction from a clean and tidy environment. Any answer is fine, as long as it's honest.
  • What are your strengths? Are you a go-getter? Do you learn quickly? Do you work very precisely? Or are you good at working independently? Name one or two things that really suit you.
  • When are you available? Be clear about the days and times you can work. Also think about whether you're available on weekends or in the evenings, for example.

Practical tips for the interview

  • Be on time. Better ten minutes early than one minute late. Find out in advance where you need to be and how to get there.
  • Pay attention to your clothing. You certainly don't need to wear a suit. Clean, tidy clothing is more than enough. It shows that you take the appointment seriously.
  • Bring a notepad and pen. Even if you don't use it, it shows you're interested and prepared.

During the interview: show who you are

The most important thing is to be yourself. Try to relax and see it as a get-to-know-you meeting. A few final tips:

  • Be honest. Don't have any experience? Just say so. Immediately add that you're eager to learn.
  • Ask questions. Ask, for example, what a working day looks like, who you'll be working with, or what exactly is expected of you. This shows genuine interest.
  • Give a firm handshake and make eye contact. An open and friendly attitude immediately makes a good impression.

Remember: your enthusiasm and motivation are your best calling card. A CV is just a piece of paper, but the impression you leave as a person is what really counts.
