Becoming a truck driver: the first steps
It all starts with obtaining the right driving licences. A truck driver needs at least a driving licence C. In addition, you must obtain your code 95. This is proof of professional competence for professional drivers. The code 95 is mandatory and valid for five years, with the option to extend it by taking further training.
The different driving licences
- With a driving licence C1 you may drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3500 kg and less than 7500 kg.
- With a driving licence C you may drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3500 kg.
- With a driving licence CE you may attach a trailer of more than 750 kg to your truck.
- With a driving licence CE1 you may attach a trailer of more than 750 kg to your truck. The permitted mass of the truck and trailer combined may be a maximum of 12,000 kg.
Holders of C, C1, CE and C1E driving licences must undergo a medical examination each time they renew their licence.

As a CE driver, you're not only responsible for delivering your cargo safely and on time, but you also enjoy the freedom of the road. You visit many different places and meet new people everywhere. It requires discipline, good planning, and the ability to work independently. Most international drivers regularly spend the night abroad. This is reflected in the earnings!
