You've spotted an interesting vacancy and want to make an instant, striking impression on an employer. Then a professional and clear CV (curriculum vitae) is of course essential. But what exactly should you include, and what should you leave out? How do you make sure your CV stands out from the pile? At Versado, we help job seekers find their dream job in technology, logistics, production, and landscaping every day. In this article, we'll explain step by step how to create a winning CV, including handy tips!

The essential components of a good CV

A recruiter often scans a CV within a few seconds. A logical structure is therefore crucial. Make sure the following components are included in your CV:

1. Personal details: the basic information

Under this heading, include the most important contact details so the employer immediately knows who they're dealing with. Preferably place this next to or below a professional, well-groomed photo of yourself.

  • Name and address: Your full name, address, and city of residence.
  • Contact details: Your active email address and phone number.
  • Date of birth: Useful for administrative purposes.
  • Driving licence: If you have one (definitely an advantage in technology or logistics!).
  • LinkedIn profile: Only if it's up to date and neatly maintained.

2. The profile: who are you?

Right after your personal details, start with a compelling personal profile. This is a short paragraph of 4 to 6 lines in which you briefly introduce yourself.

  • Mention your current job title.
  • Explain what sets you apart or what your strengths are.
  • Link your ambitions to the vacancy you're applying for.

Tip: The profile is not a mandatory component, but it does give you an immediate opportunity to showcase your personality and motivation.

3. Work experience (chronological)

The work experience you've gained is worth its weight in gold. Put your most recent job at the top and work backwards in time. Clearly state your job title, the name of the employer, and briefly summarise your main tasks and responsibilities (for example, using bullet points).

Do you still have little work experience? Don't panic! Side activities count too. Have you done volunteer work, regularly babysat, or had a part-time job? Feel free to mention it, as it shows you're not afraid of hard work.

4. Education and qualifications

Create a clear heading for your education. This generally goes below your work experience (unless you've just left school, in which case you put your education at the top).

  • State the name of the programme, the educational institution, and the years completed.
  • Don't forget relevant courses, training, and certificates (such as VCA, forklift certification, or specific technical diplomas). You can include these below or under a separate heading.

5. Languages & skills

Conclude your CV with the languages you speak and your key competencies. When it comes to skills, think of practical or social qualities that fit the sector, such as:

  • Decisive and flexible
  • A natural leader or true team player
  • Precise and solution-oriented

The ultimate Do's and Don'ts for your CV

To make sure your CV comes across as flawless and convincing, we stick to this checklist:

  • Do check your spelling: Always have a friend, partner, or family member proofread your CV to avoid spelling mistakes.
  • Do choose a professional photo: No holiday snapshots or selfies, but a neat passport photo or professional portrait in which you look friendly.
  • Do use a clean template: Use a modern Word or online template to keep the layout clean and clear.
  • Don't mention negative points: Always keep it positive about your previous employers. Don't put any conflicts down on paper.
  • Don't lie: Honesty is the best policy. If sky-high expectations turn out during a job interview to be at odds with reality, an employer will see through it right away.
  • Don't make it too long: Keep your CV compact. For most positions, a maximum of 2 pages is more than enough.
